For this project, I gave myself the job to create a blind box in a week time frame. The first step was creating the idea itself. After gaining some inspiration online, I thought of the idea of creating differently themed carousel animals. I then went into creating the sketches of seven different designs, including a mystery option. I went straight into this illustrative step so I could pull further inspiration from my own ideas and color palettes when creating the packaging and branding.

The next step I took was the create the printing guidelines to the packaging itself. I knew I wanted to carry the theme into the box design itself, so I create a circus tent/carousel shape. Eight panels to create the rounded shape, then each panel could also be dedicated to showcasing each blind box option including a front panel to introduce the project.
Since I am a visual person, I draw out the measurements on paper and then went straight to cutting a paper to see what dimensions would actually work. In the end, I only had to change the top triangles to extend out a bit longer in order to create a bigger space on top.

Before starting to add anymore elements, I start creating the branding. While I could have spent lots of time on just this elements of the project, I wanted to mainly focus this exercise on packaging design. While I like the direction I ended in, I think there are always areas to improve upon. This, again, was an exercise to see how a packaging design given zero outside guidance would look like given a one week turn around.

Last, was finally putting all the elements I had created together into the final print guideline.

After finishing all that, I still wanted to showcase the packaging one put together. Due to its original shape, I was having issues finding photos to place the mockup packaging on, so I created my own 3D box in Blender (an application I hadn’t used before). After a couple hours of learning the basics of this new application, I was able to create the box and mockups in order to show the 3D aspect of the box itself.
